GOP’s Citizenship Test Fails the Smell Test
Matthew Yglesias has a new post up regarding the latest Republican demands for a citizenship test to prevent illegal aliens from spending their own money to buy health insurance in Obama’s public exchange. Yglesias’ points out the following:
- illegal immigrants come to the US in their prime working years;
- they tend to be healthier and, on average, spend 55% less on health care than native-born Americans; and
- they are cheaper to insure, so their inclusion in the funding exchange will reduce premiums for everybody.
So, let’s be clear. A test would increase administrative costs, ensure higher insurance premiums, and would end up costing consumers more money in the long-term as the uninsured usually end up getting their care at the ER.
So, what’s the GOP’s real motivation behind this crappy citizenship test? Oh right, they hate Mexicans.
